Billie Holiday - ON THE SENTIMENTAL SIDE (The Quintessential - Volume 5)
Billie Holiday - ON THE SENTIMENTAL SIDE (The Quintessential - Volume 5)
Johnny Burke / J. Monaco
If you wonder why I'm near you
Even though I've been denied
I'm inclined to be a little
On the sentimental side
I suppose I should forget you
If I had an ounce of pride
But I guess I can't help being
On the sentimental side
I should act gay
Laugh it off and say, farewell
Say it just didn't wear well
But I'm not that way
I'm in hopes you'll think it over
And perhaps be satisfied
With a simple sort of person
On the sentimental side
I should act gay
Laugh it off and say, farewell
Say it just didn't wear well
But I'm not that way
I'm in hopes you'll think it over
And perhaps be satisfied
With a simple sort of person
On the sentimental side
Sentimental and Melancholy -- Billie Holiday (02:39)
A Billie Holiday Blues/Jazz song. (The picture is of Bette Davis from the movie All About Eve.)
No emotion? Strange remark. Maybe what you're hearing is the conversational delivery of a jazz singer with a swing background arrangement. The emotion is profoundly there, but it's embedded in the cool lack of sentimentality that jazz is about. Listen to early Nat Cole records and you'll really hear that! Anyway Billie is exquisite here, as is the song!

Billie Holiday's rendition is superb. I was a little bit blue, but listening to this has cheered me up no end!
Thank you for sharing this exquisite post.

Its hard to think back but what I meant by that is the girl doing the lip sync. After the crying bit, she doesnt really show a lot of emotion. I definately hear it but im not quite seeing it, ya know?
